Fable: The Recruit Who Did What He Wanted

55 years ago Fairchild hired a University of Utah PhD to work in the solid state group in Mountain View. The group’s manager lived in Illinois and the operation was intermittently overseen by Gordon Moore when he had time. So the recruit was left to his own devices and the devices he liked were FETs. ...

ISSCC: Analogue boost for AI robot processor

Georgia Institute of Technology has used analogue processing to squeeze a 3.12Top/W (average) artificial intelligence processor onto a CMOS (55nm) chip, consuming only 690μW (1.2V), and aimed at self-teaching micro-robots that need to learn about their immediate environments. The processor is an accelerator for ‘reinforcement learning’ – a behaviourist psychology-inspired learning algorithm that mimics the ...

Creating an accurate low voltage using PWM

Back in October I was pondering the creation of accurate micro-voltages from a microcontroller. What makes this so difficult is the voltage offset created by current in the microcontroller bond wire, amongst other things. Diagram note – I have got a sneaky feeling the capacitor was returned to the opposite rail in each case.  Anyway, ...

ISSCC: Novel gate drive improves GaN power transistor switching

GaN power transistors can shrink AC‑DC power supplies and cut losses but, to get the best out of them, their gate drive waveform needs careful attention. As a German team pointed out at ISSCC, GaN transistors have a threshold voltage of ~1V, which makes them vulnerable to spurious turn‑on through the Miller capacitance, particularly when ...
